Dear SAHS Families,
Seven years ago, I had the privilege of becoming the Principal at South Anchorage High School. I was humbled and honored when selected for the position in June of 2010. In the seven years I have been the Principal, South has grown from a brand new school in Anchorage just beginning to develop it’s identity to a thriving Alaska high school with traditions of excellence, school spirit and active participation in your school and community. I am proud of the school that South has become and the educational experience it provides for students each and every year.
Given the pride I have in the South Anchorage students, staff and community, it is difficult for me to share this summer I will be leaving the South Principal position to pursue another opportunity within the Anchorage School District as the Senior Director of Secondary Schools. While this change is a huge and exciting opportunity for me to continue to improve education for students across the ASD, I am saddened to leave my SAHS family. I have watched many of you send multiple students to South over the years and have gotten to know many of you very well. I’ve been proud of each and every student that has crossed the graduation stage, achieved their goals and become better people and students through their experience at SAHS.
The new principal hiring process for SAHS will commence next week. Through this process, students, parents and staff members will have opportunities to provide input through surveys as to what type of characteristics they hope to see in the new principal at South. Through this process, interview questions will be developed and used to select the best candidate. Please stay tuned for more information regarding this survey process in the near future. Once a candidate has been selected, there will be a school-wide announcement to students and parents towards the end of this school year.
That said, I know South will continue to be an excellent school for students given the community support it has, the student pride that exists and the excellent staff that work so very hard for their students each day. This I am confident in and I look forward to tracking the process at SAHS from my new position in the Anchorage School District. Once a Wolverine, always a Wolverine! Thank you for entrusting your children’s education and high school experiences to me these past 7 years.
